What We Know So Far...

Johnson, on the injury report for "personal reasons," was later found to have been in a car accident. Coach Canales did not stay long when questioning reporters after practice today about Johnson's health concern:

"It was a car accident, first and foremost, and that's pretty much what I know about it," Canales explained. "Enough to the point where he's in evaluation right now."

According to Joe Person of The Athletic, the linebacker's injuries are not critical but will sideline him for the Panthers' season finale.

A Breakout Season for DJ Johnson

DJ Johnson was a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and his second season with Carolina saw great improvements. He tallied 44 tackles and one assisted sack in 14 games, which more than doubled his output from his rookie season.

Though primarily a rotational player with just two starts this season, Johnson has been a significant addition to Carolina's defense. He ranks eighth on the team in total tackles and third among linebackers, trailing only Josey Jewell and Trevin Wallace.

With his rookie contract running through 2026, Johnson has promise and will look to bounce back in 2025 after a strong sophomore campaign.

Panthers' Season in Review

While the Panthers are out of playoff contention, they’ve made strides in Year 2 of the Bryce Young era, doubling their win total from 2023. The team is aiming to finish the season with a victory over their NFC South rivals, the Falcons, on Sunday.

Young had a rollercoaster season but showed flashes of brilliance, particularly against the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Against Kansas City, he threw 263 yards with a touchdown in a 30-27 loss by one point, and then against Tampa, he had a season-high 298 yards, twice sending the game to overtime as he scored two total touchdowns.

Fans React

Panthers fans have been vocal in their support for Johnson on social media.

What's Next for Carolina?

With Johnson out, the Panthers will turn to their depth to finish the season strong. Despite a tough year, the team is still optimistic about its future with Bryce Young and an improving roster.
