The Matthew Stafford situation with the Los Angeles Rams just took a sharp turn, and it’s got NFL fans buzzing. For weeks, rumors have been swirling about whether the veteran quarterback would stick with the team — and now, it looks like the Rams are open to exploring other options.
Rams Give Matthew Stafford's Agent Permission to Seek Trade Options
In a surprising move, the Los Angeles Rams have reportedly granted Matthew Stafford and his agent permission to speak with other teams about a potential trade. According to NFL Network insiders Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, this step is meant to help both Stafford and the Rams gauge his market value and figure out the best path forward.
From a financial angle, the Rams have plenty to consider. Stafford carries a massive $49.6 million cap hit for the 2025 season, but the team could save $27 million if they trade him after June 1 — or $23 million by cutting him post-June 1, per Over The Cap. The bottom line? Moving Stafford could free up a serious chunk of cash.
Potential teams that could Land Matthew Stafford
While Stafford has been clear that he plans to play in 2025, the big question now is: for which team? Trade talks have sparked plenty of speculation, with teams like the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers emerging as potential landing spots.
The Giants, in particular, seem like an interesting option after releasing quarterback Daniel Jones. Adding fuel to the fire, Stafford’s brother-in-law, Chad Hall, recently joined the Giants’ staff as an assistant quarterbacks coach. Meanwhile, the Steelers are rumored to be in the mix as they search for a proven veteran to guide their squad.
Kelly Stafford's Emotional Response to Trade Rumors
Matthew’s wife, Kelly Stafford, has also weighed in on the growing uncertainty. Speaking on her podcast,
The Morning After, Kelly didn’t hold back, expressing frustration over the trade chatter — not just about her husband but also about star receiver Cooper Kupp. She made it clear that Matthew’s priority is winning, saying,
"My husband wants to win. He's not trying to put a team in a bad situation."Kelly also acknowledged that while the Staffords love LA, they’re not opposed to relocating if it comes to that. For her, feeling valued by the team is just as important as their loyalty to the city.
With trade talks officially in motion, the Rams are at a crossroads. Will they strike a deal and part ways with their Super Bowl-winning QB, or will Stafford stay put for another shot at leading the team in 2025?
One thing’s for sure — this offseason just got a whole lot more interesting for Rams fans.
