Reporter’s post-game encouragement to Jaguars head coach Liam Coen draws mixed response following playoff elimination

A brief moment between a reporter and coach Liam Coen at a Jacksonville Jaguars post-game press conference received a divided response online. After the Jaguars’ narrow playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills on Jan. 11, first-year head coach Coen faced reporters following a season that proved to be applause-worthy despite being eliminated recently.

Instead of a question, one journalist offered words of praise and encouragement for the team. The reporter further praised Coen for being a fearless leader for the Jaguars and doing a great job for the team despite being just hired last year. The exchange caught on camera went viral on social media, and while some see it as uplifting, others see it as unnecessary.

A short exchange that exposed long-standing tensions in sports media culture

During the press conference, Lynn Jones of the Jacksonville Free Press addressed Coen directly, saying, “I just want to tell you congratulations on your success, young man.” She also added, “You hold your head up, alright? You guys have had a most magnificent season. She also gave a heartfelt wish, saying, “Take care and much continued success to you and the entire team.”


Coen smiled and responded, “Thank you, ma’am.” The Jaguars had just ended a 13-4 season with a 27-24 wild-card loss, and emotions were still raw. For some, the exchange felt unnecessary and performative. Reporters like Ian Begley and Brandon Warne criticized the moment, with Warne stating, “This is not awesome. This is called being a cheerleader.”

Associated Press reporter Mark Long went further, calling it embarrassing and a waste of time. However, others, including Sports personality Pat McAfee, defended Jones amidst the hate, calling out the ‘political journalists,’ stating, “...OBVIOUSLY NOT ALL OF THEM, but a LARGE % of these things hate sports...they hate what sports are for people (happiness)...”

Jones herself stood firm about her kind gesture. Speaking to WJXT, she said the coach appeared emotional, which prompted her response. She rejected the criticism directly, noting, “I’ve been in this business more than 25 years,” and how she knows her job more than anyone.
