NEW DELHI: Following the recent departure of defensive coordinator Sean Desai, the Philadelphia Eagles are actively exploring potential candidates to fill the key role. According to ESPN reports on Monday, the Eagles are interviewing former Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera for the vacant position.
Rivera, 62, brings a wealth of coaching experience to the table, having served as a defensive coordinator on Norv Turner's staff with the then-San Diego Chargers from 2008-2010.
Notably, the 2010 Chargers topped the
NFL in total defense and ranked second in scoring defense under Rivera's guidance.
With a coaching career that spans both defensive coordinator and head coaching roles, Rivera boasts a record of 102-103-2. His head coaching stints include the Washington Commanders from 2020-2023 and the Carolina Panthers from 2011-2019. Additionally, Rivera has previous ties to Philadelphia, having served as Andy Reid's linebackers coach for five seasons from 1999-2003.
The Eagles' decision to part ways with Sean Desai on Sunday follows a series of challenging performances by the defense, prompting head coach
Nick Sirianni to seek a new defensive leader.
Desai, 40, was demoted after the team faced lopsided defeats to the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys in December. Matt Patricia took over play-calling duties, but the defensive struggles persisted, culminating in a 32-9 wild-card loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on January 15.
Desai, who took over in February following Jonathan Gannon's departure to become the Arizona Cardinals' head coach, oversaw a defensive unit that allowed 35 passing touchdowns (second in the NFL) and ranked 30th in red zone and third-down defense in 2023.
