Russell Wilson struggled in his first game as quarterback for the New York Giants. On September 7, 2025, in Landover, Maryland, the Giants lost 21-6 to the Washington Commanders. The offense managed only 242 total yards and six points. Wilson went 17-for-37 passing for 168 yards and failed to find the end zone. Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, taken in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, is already the focus of fans who want change. But head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka say Wilson will remain the starter in Week 2.
Jaxson Dart moves up as Jameis Winston sits out
The Giants made a key roster decision when they declared Jameis Winston inactive for Sunday’s game. That move pushed rookie Jaxson Dart into the active backup role behind Russell Wilson.
Fans believe Dart could spark the offense after the poor showing in Week 1. But Daboll repeated that the rookie will not be rushed.
“We have a plan with Jaxson, and we’re going to stick to it,” Daboll told reporters this week.
Mike Kafka has past experience with young quarterbacks. He was with the Kansas City Chiefs when Patrick Mahomes sat almost a full season behind Alex Smith in 2017.
Kafka also worked under Daboll in Buffalo when Josh Allen had a tough rookie year.
Both coaches believe giving Dart more time to learn will benefit the Giants long-term.

Russell Wilson will start again when the Giants face the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2. Daboll said he trusts the veteran and wants the entire offense to improve.
“It’s not just one guy. We all have to be better,” Daboll explained after practice. Wilson admitted his own mistakes, telling reporters, “We left points out there. I need to finish drives and give our team a chance.”The Giants know the schedule ahead is tough, with five of their next six games against teams that reached the playoffs last season.
Throwing Dart into that stretch with a shaky offensive line could hurt his development. Still, if Wilson struggles again, the calls from fans for Jaxson Dart will only grow louder at MetLife Stadium.
