“That bothers me”: Dave Portnoy questions Tom Brady loyalty after MVP praise for Matthew Stafford over Drake Maye

The MVP talk has turned tense, and it starts with Tom Brady. As the 2025 NFL MVP race heats up, Brady picked Matthew Stafford over New England’s rising star Drake Maye. That choice did not sit well with Patriots fans. It made one voice especially loud, Dave Portnoy.

Voting for the 2025 MVP has already closed, and the league is expected to name the winner in the coming weeks. The debate, however, is far from over. Brady, now an analyst with Fox Sports, shared his honest view while breaking down the race. He made it clear that his pick was based on play, not emotion.

Tom Brady’s words quickly spread online. Many Patriots fans felt hurt. Some even called it a betrayal. Portnoy went further, saying Brady should always stand with a Patriots player, especially when that player is Drake Maye.

Brady praised Stafford for what he has done this season with the Los Angeles Rams. He pointed to big numbers, strong leadership, and steady play when it mattered most.

Brady said,

“Look, I do not get a vote. I think what Matthew Stafford has done this season has been absolutely remarkable. Forty-six touchdowns, for any quarterback, that is a dream season. He has been spectacular.”

Brady also spoke kindly about Drake Maye and his future with the New England Patriots.

He added,

“Drake Maye has done some incredible things with Josh McDaniels in their first season together. Drake has got a long career ahead. I am sure he is going to have many opportunities. I am going to say Matthew Stafford.”

That final line upset Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports. Speaking on Beyond BakerMayfield with Maye’s wife, Ann Michael Maye, Portnoy did not hide his feelings.

Portnoy said,

“They were saying Brady said Stafford should get it. I heard that walking in here, and that bothers me. I feel like Brady should always be rooting for the Patriots guy.”

He then pointed to his shirt and joked,

“Do you see this shirt? ‘Drake Brady.’ It is kind of like from one to the other. But I do not know if I am going to keep that shirt if he is picking Stafford and sticking up for the old guys.”

For Drake Maye, the noise has not changed his focus. His attention remains on his team and the postseason run ahead.
