Looking back at the 2024 offseason, the New York Giants agreed to pay a hefty $141 million for a five-year contract with Brian Burns, a former star for the Carolina Panthers. With three years left for Giants’ linebacker Burns out of his humongous five-year deal, a move to make the player’s $16 million base salary a signing bonus to free up a massive $10-12 million in cap space. The real catch about the strategic move is to have a cordoned draft-in for their No. 3 overall pick, Abdul Carter, holding a four-year contract deal worth a whopping $45.2 million.
The New York Giants turn Brian Burns’ contract into a game-changer
As the 2025 NFL season will be commencing in the upcoming months, the offseason drafting has been making all the buzz. The stakes are higher than ever before, with teams offering the best deals to acquire big names at higher prices and players looking for the best deals as free agents. Amidst the ongoing offseason changes taking place rapidly, the Giants’ strategic move has caught attention.
Having performed immensely well last year for the Giants, Burns' stats were 8.5 sacks, 18 QB hits, and 17 tackles for loss. Given that Burns still has more than a few years left to play for the Giants, it was generally anticipated that he would remain with the team. The win-win deal came to light when giving a $16 million signing bonus deal did not obstruct drafting linebacker Carter, the No. 3 overall pick, precisely.
As reported by Field Yates of ESPN, “The specifics on this: $16M of Burns' base salary was converted into a signing bonus, creating $12M in 2025 cap space. That gives the Giants cover on the Abdul Carter signing, plus more room to work with.”
With a strong defensive force including players like Burns and Carter, the Giants are planning to stay competitive in the present by keeping enough cap space to bet on a long-term deal. As the Giants are keeping their play smart, it is already sounding like an exciting season to come.
