The Buffalo Bills want to talk to Brian Daboll. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Bills requested an interview with the former New York Giants head coach for their head coaching vacancy after Buffalo fired Sean McDermott on Monday. McDermott’s exit came two days after the Bills lost to the Denver Broncos in the divisional round.
Brian Daboll has the Bills history and the Josh Allen tie that matters most
Daboll isn’t a random name on a long list. He ran Buffalo’s offense for four seasons, serving as the Bills’ offensive coordinator from 2018-21. That stretch overlapped with Josh Allen’s rise into an MVP-level quarterback, and Daboll built his reputation in Buffalo as an offensive coach who could shape an offense around Allen’s strengths.
Daboll left after the 2021 season to take the Giants head coaching job in 2022. New York fired him in November, ending a three-and-a-half-season run.
He also has roots in Western New York. He grew up in Hamburg, N.Y., and stayed in the area for college at the University of Rochester, which keeps the “homecoming” angle real, not forced.
Buffalo is also interviewing another familiar name. Schefter reported Anthony Lynn, a former Bills assistant head coach, is scheduled to interview Saturday.
Buffalo’s search is crowded, and Daboll has other doors open if the Bills stall
This is not a quiet carousel. Daboll has already drawn real interest around the league.
He interviewed for the Tennessee Titans head coaching job before the Titans hired former New York Jets coach Robert Saleh. Daboll has also interviewed for the Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator opening, and he has been labeled a “top target” for that role.
Dianna Russini of The Athletic added a key wrinkle: Daboll reportedly wants the Bills job, but if Buffalo doesn’t hire him, he could pivot to Tennessee’s offensive coordinator opening to coach Cam Ward.
Buffalo’s candidate pool includes multiple coordinators and a few names with recent head coaching ties, including:
- Lou Anarumo, Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator
- Joe Brady, Bills offensive coordinator
- Grant Udinski, Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator
- Anthony Lynn, Washington Commanders running backs coach
- Anthony Weaver, Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator
Buffalo just chose upheaval after nine seasons, and it’s searching for an identity reset. Daboll sells the simplest pitch in that room. He knows the building. He knows Allen. He knows what the Bills offense looked like when it scared people.
