The Minnesota Vikings enter the 2025 NFL season with a veteran-laden offense ready to compete for the playoffs, but the spotlight is firmly on second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy. After missing his entire rookie season due to injury, the former Michigan star is now healthy and stepping into the starting role. Veterans like tight end T.J. Hockenson are already impressed with what they see.
T.J. Hockenson praises J.J. McCarthy’s leadership and preparation ahead of starting role
During a recent training camp update, T.J. Hockenson praised McCarthy, noting his leadership and maturity on the field. “He doesn’t feel like a young guy,” Hockenson told reporters. “The way he controls the huddle, the way he comes in, his energy in the huddle, how he talks about the game, the level, and the mentality—it's high-level thinking.”
McCarthy inherits the starting role after Sam Darnold, who led the Vikings to 14 wins and a playoff appearance last season. The transition comes with heightened expectations, and any early struggles could raise questions about the decision to move on from Darnold.
However, Hockenson highlighted McCarthy’s dedication behind the scenes as a key factor for future success. From attending meetings last year while sidelined to studying game film and mastering the playbook, McCarthy has prepared thoroughly for this moment.

“He deserves all the credit,” Hockenson added. “Last year, obviously, going into all the meetings. This year, just being as engaged as he has been and as much learning as he's done has been a lot of fun to watch. We'll just continue this and keep moving forward.”
With experienced players like Hockenson, Justin Jefferson, and a strong offensive line supporting him, McCarthy has the tools to succeed. If he translates his training camp poise into regular-season performance, Minnesota could be in line for double-digit wins and another playoff berth.
