In 2015, a routine trip to a Paris clinic became headline news. Reports claimed Bündchen wore a burqa to avoid paparazzi attention during her surgery visit. The backlash was swift and fierce. Critics accused her of using a sacred garment as a prop. One religious leader did not mince words. Imam Muhammad Abdullah Kamal Al-Azhari told Page Six, “She's not doing it for Islam. This is very bad ... She's wearing a holy thing for a bad purpose.”

Bündchen never publicly defended the disguise, but she later spoke openly about regretting the surgery itself. “When I woke up, I was like, 'What have I done?' I felt like I was living in a body I didn't recognize,” she said. “For the first year, I wore [baggy] clothes because I felt uncomfortable.”

Time changed her relationship with that choice. After her divorce from Tom Brady, Bündchen returned to work without hesitation. She fronted a major campaign for Louis Vuitton and reentered elite fashion circles on her own terms.
