The COVID-19 pandemic made us see every aspect of our lives through a different lens, something we hadn’t done in decades. It was also the period of Lockdown Love, when every emotion mattered more, life felt precious, and time to enjoy things seemed short. American actress
Shailene Woodley and
NFL star
Aaron Rodgers probably felt the same, as in February 2021, they shocked the world by announcing their engagement. Karen Mizoguchi of PEOPLE reported in February 2021 that veteran quarterback dropped exciting news during the 2020 NFL MVP acceptance speech.
“It’s an honor to win this award for the third time,” Rodgers said. “2020 was a crazy year filled with change and growth, and some amazing, memorable moments. 180 straight days of having my nose hair scraped, playing for very little fans or no stands the entire season, I played some of the best football of my career.”

“I’d like to thank my teammates for their support, inspiration, protection, and incredible play on the field,” Rodgers continued. “The coaching staff for their efforts to make this fun every week, the energy, positivity, and daily presentations that kept us going.
Off the field, I got a great group of people that support me. So, I’d like to thank my team and my fiancée [Shailene Woodley].” That’s how Rodgers confirmed his engagement to Woodley. Now, let’s learn a little about her.
Woodley first starred in ABC’s
The Secret Life of the American Teenager [2008 to 2013] as Amy Juergens. During the show, she also appeared in the popular movie
The Descendants [2011] with Hollywood legend George Clooney. After her show ended, she starred in the romantic classic

Shailene Woodley’s character Jane Chapman went through trauma in Big Little Lies, and years later, Woodley reportedly went through a toxic relationship with Aaron Rodgers
In 2017, Shailene appeared in HBO’s
Big Little Lies, earning several prestigious nominations in the Primetime Emmy Awards [Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie], Golden Globe Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Satellite Awards, and Critics’ Choice Television Awards. She won the Gracie Allen Awards in 2018.
In
Big Little Lies, Woodley worked alongside Nicole Kidman [Celeste], Reese Witherspoon [Madeline], Laura Dern [Renata], and Zoe Kravitz [Bonnie]. Her character is a [---] [---] survivor. Her past affects her present when she discovers her present is actually her past. In the series, she tries to avoid her past as much as possible. Her character, Jane Chapman, struggles with post-traumatic stress symptoms and anxiety.
In her Dec. 2024 interview with Melissa Johnson of Outside Magazine, Shailene described the aftermath of her high-profile breakup with Rodgers. “I haven’t shared much about my relationship with Aaron [Rodgers] because it always makes me cry,” Woodley said. “It was not right. But it was beautiful. I had a really awful, traumatic thing happen in early 2022.
I felt like I lost my soul, my self, my happiness, my joy. I really understood depression and anxiety, and like, complete soul detachment.” Johnson noted that Woodley’s engagement to NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers was called off that February [2022].
Shailene stayed in the toxic relationship because she thought she was empathizing with someone else. “Empathy kept me in this loop of feeling everything for everyone. I knew I was depressed when I looked at a tree and felt nothing. That was the lowest low of my life.”
Woodley’s stylist and very close best friend, Kris Zero, would wake her up with blasting music to get her out of bed. "Sometimes I was so angry at her. But then we’d go surf, and for ten minutes that day, I thought life could be okay again. Then the depression would come back, and she’d go, ‘We’re volunteering at the horse ranch!’ and we’d find a random [----] horse ranch and clean up horse [---].
We’d clean hooves and brush the horses, and for 20 minutes that day, I thought life could be okay again. Then depression came back, and she’d wake up the next morning and go, ‘Let’s go on a hike and bring trash bags and clean up trash!"
