She grew up hearing their stories spun stories out of thin air, ghost tales at the dinner table, blues on the radio. Tony was a voracious reader and she grew up devouring everything from Tolstoy to folktales. She taught in a college and raised two sons solo after a messy divorce. It was during this time that she turned to writing. In 1970, her debut The Bluest Eye was published. It was a raw gut-check on beauty standards and Black girlhood that still haunts readers. She didn't become a celebrity overnight; it was steady fire. He next book was Sula, followed by Beloved in 1987. It was her masterpiece that got her the Pulitzer. In 1993, she became the first Black woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, with the Swedish Academy calling her prose "visionary force" and "prophetic importance."
