Quote of the day by Toni Morrison, "Could you really love somebody who was absolutely nobody without you? You really want somebody...."
Who would not remember Tony Morrison and her The Bluest Eye! The compelling book with its deep message that Tony gave to the world probably chnaged the way many of us look at so many things in life. But who was Tony Morrison? Tony Morrison is one of the most powerful female voices in modern American literature. She was born in Chloe Ardelia Wofford in 1931 in Lorain, Ohio, to working-class Black parents. She grew up hearing their stories spun stories out of thin air, ghost tales at the dinner table, blues on the radio. Tony was a voracious reader and she grew up devouring everything from Tolstoy to folktales. She taught in a college and raised two sons solo after a messy divorce. It was during this time that she turned to writing. In 1970, her debut The Bluest Eye was published. It was a raw gut-check on beauty standards and Black girlhood that still haunts readers. She didn't become a celebrity overnight; it was steady fire. He next book was Sula, followed by Beloved in 1987. It was her masterpiece that got her the Pulitzer. In 1993, she became the first Black woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, with the Swedish Academy calling her prose "visionary force" and "prophetic importance."
Morrison passed away in 2019, leaving echoes behind, still resonant today.Tony Morrison's work reads like a family reunion gone deep, complicated, mythic and with jazz rhythms and ancestral whispers. Morrison's novels aren't linear plots; they're complex accounts of Black life in mid-century America, blending the supernatural with the brutal everyday. Slavery's shadow looms large, but so does flight, literal and figurative, as escape, freedom, identity. He language is lush, poetic and unflinching.
Song of Solomon
Toni Morrison's famous quote most beautifully dwells into what's worth and what is not in relationships. She says in Song of Solomon, "You can't own a human being. You can't lose what you don't own. Suppose you did own him. Could you really love somebody who was absolutely nobody without you? You really want somebody like that? Somebody who falls apart when you walk out the door? You don't, do you? And neither does he. You're turning over your whole life to him. Your whole life, girl. And if it means so little to you that you can just give it away, hand it to him, then why should it mean any more to him? He can't value you more than you value yourself. The quote is from her 1977 novel Song of Solomon. It's Ruth Dead who is spelling out the hard truth to her daughter Corinthians: "You can't own a human being. You can't lose what you don't own. Suppose you did own him. Could you really love somebody who was absolutely nobody without you?..." Read it slow, it's conversational, like your auntie grabbing your shoulders mid-breakup, eyes fierce with lived regret. No flowery metaphors; just raw logic wrapped in rhythm. It went viral on Tumblr in the 2010s, TikTok therapy reels today, millions agreeing to it along because it names the trap we all sniff around. It talks about the red flags in a relationship that we all tend to ignore. It explains what should one really see in a partner and what should one ignore. In very simple and plane language a mother exposes the hard reality of relationship before her daughter.
