The Florida Panthers are inching closer to getting veteran winger Brad Marchand back in the lineup. After missing several weeks due to an upper-body injury, Marchand could make his long-awaited debut for the Panthers this Friday against the Utah Hockey Club.
Brad Marchand has been sidelined since early March
Marchand, who was traded from the Boston Bruins earlier this month, has yet to play a game for Florida. The longtime Bruins captain suffered an upper-body injury on March 4 and has been rehabbing since. Despite his injury status, Boston elected to move on from Marchand rather than negotiate a contract extension, sending him to a division rival in exchange for a conditional 2027 second-round pick.
While Marchand has been on the ice in recent days, Panthers head coach Paul Maurice made it clear that the team is being cautious with his return.
"He has been on the ice for a little bit now," Maurice said. "That's probably the advantage to four days [off] in that we don't lose another game. We'll get him through a full practice [Thursday] and make an assessment. But we are shooting for Friday against Utah right now."
Panthers are taking a cautious approach to Brad Marchand’s return
Although Marchand is progressing well, Maurice emphasized that the team won’t rush him back before he is fully ready. "We're not jamming these guys back on their first available day," he explained. "We're not bringing them in early. If he says he wants a few more days, we're good with that."
Marchand has been practicing on the Panthers’ second line alongside Tomas Nosek and Mackie Samoskevich. This positioning could be key, as Florida is currently missing another star forward, Matthew Tkachuk, due to injury.
With Tkachuk sidelined, Maurice expects Marchand to fill that role upon his return. "With Matthew out of our lineup, there's a place for [Marchand], for sure," Maurice noted. "That's just comfort level. Of all the games he has played with our guys, the most have been with Sam Bennett (internationally for Canada). He has some conversation there. That's the idea of putting him there."
Marchand has had a productive season so far, tallying 21 goals and 47 points in 61 games. His presence in the lineup could be crucial for the Panthers as they battle for the top spot in the Atlantic Division alongside the Toronto Maple Leafs.
