Connor McDavid walked into a school gym this week and triggered the kind of roar he usually hears under playoff lights. That reaction said less about celebrity and more about what his visit represented. This was not a promotional stop or a casual appearance. It was the payoff for a student-driven effort rooted in empathy, teamwork, and purpose. The moment he stepped inside Allendale School, the energy told a deeper story about why this day mattered.
The visit was earned, not gifted. Allendale was one of 50 schools competing in the Ben Stelter School Fundraiser, a national effort built around students taking ownership of change. The challenge was simple. Raise money, earn ballots, and one school would win a visit from the Oilers captain. When the dust settled, more than $285,000 had been raised. Allendale’s share was modest in dollars but massive in heart.
Connor McDavid turns a student fundraiser into a lesson on community
Students sold pizzas on Fridays, organized a jersey raffle, and turned a gym into a stage by throwing pies at six teachers and a volunteer. The idea worked because it brought the entire school together. One of the student leaders, Moossa Choulli, summed up the moment of victory by saying, “We were so surprised to win it. But, we were so happy as soon as we got it”. The excitement was instant and genuine.
Another student leader, Atharv Keshri, described the atmosphere during the now-famous pie event. “It felt great. Everyone was watching, yelling after each pie was thrown. It was an awesome experience”. That same energy carried into Tuesday’s assembly, where nearly 600 students packed the gym to ask questions and listen.
McDavid did not position himself as the reward. He reframed the moment with clarity and humility. “Kids helping kids, it’s a special thing”, he said. “I hope the kids take away the power of community and what together we can all do to help one another.” Later, he expanded on the idea of his role in the fundraiser. “The prize really is how many people that this (money) is going to help, and all the money that’s raised and all the families that will get support. So that really is the prize. But if I can be the little cherry on top for some of these schools and some of these kids, then that’s great,” McDavid said.
The funds will support efforts to bring proton therapy, an advanced cancer treatment, to Canada. The goal connects directly to the legacy of Ben Stelter, the Oilers superfan whose spirit continues to unite communities. When McDavid left the gym, the cheers followed him out. What stayed behind was something stronger. A lesson in what happens when young people believe they can make a difference and prove it together.
