The Vegas Golden Knights have never been afraid to make bold moves—and if recent reports are any indication, they may already be eyeing their next blockbuster. After acquiring Mitch Marner from Toronto this offseason, Vegas is reportedly considering an even bigger swing: targeting Connor McDavid if he hits free agency in 2026.
With Jack Eichel's future uncertain, Vegas may chase the biggest name in hockey
Vegas already made headlines this summer by bringing in Marner, adding elite playmaking to a team that’s long been in “win-now” mode. But as they celebrate that deal, looming on the horizon is a much tougher decision: Jack Eichel is set to become a free agent next year.
While Vegas would ideally keep Eichel, there's growing buzz that they may instead pursue the biggest prize in hockey—Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid. With McDavid also set to test free agency, the possibility of him moving to a U.S. market is now on the radar of many NHL insiders.
Bleacher Report’s Adam Gretz summed up what many in hockey are thinking, writing: “Salary cap? What salary cap?! They’ll figure it out later… Eichel is great. He helped Vegas win a Stanley Cup. But when has loyalty ever been a thing for the Golden Knights? This is the most cutthroat, win-at-all-costs organization in the NHL. If there is even a small chance that McDavid could be available, they’ll likely be plotting a way to get involved.”
Of course, the major challenge is financial. McDavid will command one of the largest contracts in NHL history. But if the Golden Knights part ways with Eichel, cap space could open up. And with their aggressive front office and championship pedigree, Vegas has both the pull and the culture to make a serious run at McDavid.
