Craig Berube breaks down how Auston Matthews is adapting to life without Mitch Marner on the Maple Leafs roster

The are entering a defining period in their , one without longtime playmaker for the first time in nearly a decade. And while the transition has forced some reshuffling, head coach Craig Berube believes Auston Matthews is handling the challenge with poise and maturity that befits a true leader.

After a heartbreaking 6–5 overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings on October 4, Berube was asked how Matthews is adjusting to the new team dynamic without his former linemate. The head coach didn’t mince words.

“I don’t think there’s a huge adjustment, to be honest with you,” Berube said. “He’s a great player, and he’ll find a way to do what he needs to do to get the job done.”


That confidence reflects not only Matthews’ individual skill but also his leadership evolution as team captain. With Marner now in Vegas, Matthews has had to shoulder more offensive responsibility while developing chemistry with new linemates, a process Berube insists he’s managing seamlessly.

Through one game, Matthews has recorded one goal, a +1 rating, and over 20 minutes of ice time. His performance continues to anchor Toronto’s offense as the Leafs search for the right rhythm without their longtime playmaking core intact.

Auston Matthews reflects on his friendship with Marner and the business side of hockey

Despite the professional separation, there’s no bad blood between Matthews and Marner. Earlier this season, Matthews called Marner a “friend for life,” adding, “Those are always tough conversations to have… you’re teammates, you’re also friends, and he’ll be a friend of all of ours for life.”

For his part, Marner admitted it will be “weird walking into the visitors’ side” when he faces the Leafs as a member of the Vegas Golden Knights, but he still holds “a lot of appreciation and love for a lot of people there.”
