“It isn't about me; it's about the teams I've had”: Coach Lindy Ruff registers 900th NHL win as Buffalo Sabres close out season against Philadelphia Flyers

Buffalo Sabres coach Lindy Ruff has achieved his 900th NHL win, becoming the fifth coach in NHL history to reach this milestone. The Sabres defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 5-4 in their final game, with Ryan McLeod providing 607 wins. Ruff credits his success to the teams he has coached and the people around him. The Sabres will look to capitalize on this milestone achievement as they look to return to the playoffs for 2026.

The Sabres defeated the game in a dramatic way, paced by forward Ryan McLeod with a goal and two assists providing 607 wins to Lindy Ruff with the club—second to Al Arbour's 740 wins with the New York Islanders on most by a coach with one team.
With 900 wins under his belt, Lindy Ruff is now the fourth member of the elite coaching club in the NHL alongside Scotty Bowman (1,244), Joel Quenneville (969), Barry Trotz (914), and Florida Panthers coach Paul Maurice (916). Maurice and Ruff are the only two active coaches in the league to have achieved the 900-win milestone.
After the game, Ruff was modest, crediting the achievement to those around him. “It just means I've coached a lot of hockey games, had a lot of good players and a lot of good coaches and management that put a lot of trust in me. It isn't about me, it's about the teams that I've had and the people around me,” Ruff said.
Buffalo ended the year on a bang in their final game, establishing a 4-1 lead before the Flyers came back at them. JJ Peterka, Alex Tuch, and Jack Quinn each recorded a goal and an assist, while Peyton Krebs scored short-handed. James Reimer was solid in net, making 21 saves to finish up 10-10-2.

Philadelphia Flyers show fight, but fall short in finale

A Herculean effort in vain, the Philadelphia Flyers could not stage the comeback. Two-goal outing by rookie Matvei Michkov broke a six-game goal drought for him, and Bobby Brink and Tyson Foerster each scored a goal and an assist. Rookie Aleksei Kolosov collected 26 saves in the effort, but the Flyers had the worst Eastern Conference record for only the second time in their history.
Ryan McLeod sealed the win for Buffalo with an empty-netter in the final minute, leaving the Sabres never trailing during the game.

Return of Lindy Ruff's payoff as Buffalo Sabres look ahead

While the Buffalo Sabres are not going to be making a playoff push, Lindy Ruff coming back to the organization has brought new life and purpose into a young roster. With star potential in the lineup and a rock in the back of the bench, the Sabres will look to capitalize on this milestone achievement as they look to return to the playoffs for 2026.
