Nathan MacKinnon net worth: Details on Avalanche center’s career earnings, investments, biggest achievements and more
Since getting drafted first overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2013 NHL Draft, Nathan MacKinnon has remained one of the most elite centers in the league. His dominance has translated to success both on and off the ice.
While he has already won multiple team and individual accolades, he has also shown significant business savviness. While known for his team-friendly deals with Colorado to keep them competitive, he also boasts some lucrative contracts and has cemented himself as one of the league’s top earners.
Mackinnon currently boasts a net worth of approximately $30 million. According to HockeyZonePlus, the 30-year-old has earned $95.9 million throughout his NHL career. While that’s high up on the list of NHL contracts and remains the biggest Avalanche contract of all time, it only accounts for part of his net worth.
The Halifax native has shown considerable financial success, as he has used his fame in his native Canada to get into some major endorsement deals. This has helped him boost his wealth while getting to have independent income apart from his NHL contract.
The deal carries an annual cap hit of $12.6 million and made him the NHL's highest-paid player at the time of signing. The contract structure features a massive signing bonus component. Of the total $100.8 million, an astounding $85.34 million comes in the form of signing bonuses.
For the 2025-26 season, MacKinnon earns a base salary of just $800,000 while receiving a $15.25 million signing bonus. The fully guaranteed contract runs through the 2030-31 season, when MacKinnon will be 35 years old.
The deal represents a significant raise from his previous seven-year, $44.1 million contract that averaged just $6.3 million annually from 2016 to 2023. That earlier contract was widely considered one of the most team-friendly deals in the NHL, given MacKinnon's elite production.
He famously told Forbes he would "take less again" on his next contract because he wanted to win with his group in Colorado. However, after helping deliver a Stanley Cup championship in 2022, MacKinnon received fair market value on his extension.
The Bauer partnership has proven particularly valuable as MacKinnon has appeared in video series aimed at helping hockey players of all ages improve their skills. His Gatorade deal aligns him with one of sports' most recognizable brands.
He's also featured in Guaranteed Rate commercials promoting their mortgage services. The center hasn’t revealed the numbers related to these deals, but according to experts, Mackinnon should be making upwards of a few million dollars each year, which further pumps his net worth.
However, MacKinnon listed the penthouse for sale at $3.5 million in 2021, stating he wanted more outdoor space for his dog. He also owns a residence in the Washington Park area of Denver that he purchased in 2016 for $2.1 million.
While the Avalanche center has won plenty of silverware in his career, his biggest achievement remains lifting the Stanley Cup with Colorado. He posted 24 points (13 goals, 11 assists) to lead his team to a victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning for the franchise’s first championship in 21 years.
His performance throughout the Stanley Cup finals made sure that the Lightning didn’t get to win their third consecutive title as the Avalanche took the win in game six. But despite shining throughout the season, it was teammate Cale Makar who took the Conn Smythe Trophy, as he outscored MacKinnon with 29 points.
MacKinnon finally got his redemption two seasons later as he recorded his career best of 140 points (51 points, 89 assists) across 82 games, and he bagged the Hart Memorial Trophy. With that, he also broke the franchise record of Peter Statsny (139 points), who held the record since 1982.
Not to mention, in the very same season, he also clinched the Ted Lindsay Award for the league’s most outstanding player as voted by his peers. This made him part of an elite club that includes legends like Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Phil Esposito, and Nikita Kucherov.
MacKinnon's trophy case also includes the 2014 Calder Trophy as rookie of the year and the 2020 Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship. He's been selected to seven consecutive All-Star Games and earned First Team All-Star honors in 2024.
