According to the NHL, the forward has scored just 1 goal, with 5 assists in 7 games played in the 2025-26 playoffs. Kucherov, who is believed to be one of the best playmakers in the NHL, was unable to play in high-danger areas as he had in the regular season. NHL insider Pierre LeBrun has floated a recent speculation about a potential trade scenario involving Nikita Kucherov, one of the league’s most dynamic offensive players. This rumor has arisen due to Kucherov’s underwhelming performance during this season, and perhaps due to the Tampa Bay Lightning’s exit from the playoffs. Further, another reason could be the end of his contract with the team. His contract expires at the end of the 2026-27 season, making Kucherov an Unrestricted Free Agent.

Speaking in a recent discussion, LeBrun clarified that while there are no active talks involving Kucherov, he suggested that the evolving financial pressures of the NHL could force the team to make offseason trade moves and evaluate bold roster decisions. He stated, “Kucherov had his moments in this series, but he was held pointless in the last three games and overall, his frustration showed throughout. That wasn’t Hart Trophy Kucherov in this series.”


Regarding the trade move, he further added, “Odds are the Lightning’s top priority is, in fact, to extend Kucherov, who turns 33 in June. But I will just point out, BriseBois has never been afraid to swing big. That would be one heck of a chip to push into the market.” He also observed that there might be some big-name players on the move in trades this summer.

As per PuckPedia, Nikita Kucherov is signed to an 8-year, $76 million contract with a cap hit of $9.5 million per season, playing for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

It is to be noted that the Lightning have been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs in four straight years. Though Kucherov has failed to be in his best form in the games he has played this season, the Lightning star is still widely expected to remain a central figure in Tampa Bay’s pursuit of continued success.
