Pittsburgh Penguins emerge in NHL star defenceman trade talks as New Jersey Devils weigh options this offseason
The New Jersey Devils’ Simon Nemec is getting some looks from several teams, including the Pittsburgh Penguins, as the 2026-27 NHL season approaches. The former second overall pick has been mentioned in trade talks as the Devils look for ways to fill other needs.
The 22-year-old Slovak defenseman has been linked to several teams, and Pittsburgh is one of the clubs believed to be monitoring the situation because of its need for help on the right side of its blue line.
The 22-year-old appeared in 68 games for the New Jersey Devils in 2025-26, registering 11 goals, 15 assists, 26 points, 104 blocked shots and 23 hits. His skating ability and puck-moving skills have made him one of the more intriguing names in the NHL trade rumour mill this season.
The New Jersey Devils have a deep blue line, and that has led to some Nemec speculation. Veteran Dougie Hamilton, John Marino, Johnathan Kovacevic and Jonas Siegenthaler are all under contract, along with Luke Hughes, who is still a big part of the team’s future. That depth has made it difficult for Nemec to secure a permanent top-four role.
The New Jersey front office has been connected to seeking more offensive firepower, and a trade involving the young blueliner could be on the table if the return fits the needs of the club.
Simon Nemec has been linked to the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Islanders at various times. Trade speculation has also been swirling around the Dallas Stars as reports surface on forward Jason Robertson.
With NHL trade rumors running rampant during the offseason, one situation drawing attention around the league is Simon Nemec and his future with the New Jersey Devils.
