The Flames responded later in the period through Nazem Kadri, as he had an even score after converting a play near the crease. The goal carried extra importance, with rookie Matvei Gridin picking up his first NHL assist in what was otherwise a tense night for Calgary. From that point forward, the game settled back into a defensive grind, with both teams prioritizing structure over risk.
Overtime didn't last long. Jack Hughes took the puck down into the offensive zone and feathered a backhand pass to Nemec, who joined the rush and finished from close range. The goal epitomized how confident New Jersey is in deploying defensemen as offensive playmakers and trusting its young players in high-leverage situations.
