The Washington Capitals have officially re-signed defenseman Timothy Liljegren after a solid 2025-26 NHL season. The new deal provides Washington with more defensive stability as they move into next season after several uncertainties on the blue line.

The former Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman was traded from the San Jose Sharks to the Washington Capitals late in the season. Washington management views Liljegren as a key puck-moving option who could handle larger minutes during the upcoming NHL campaign.

The Washington Capitals have announced a two-year extension for Timothy Liljegren with a total value of $6.5 million and an average annual value of $3.25 million.

Washington brought in Liljegren before the NHL trade deadline, and the organization quickly viewed him as a good long-term piece on the blue line. He only played four games for the Capitals after the trade, but his overall numbers for the 2025-26 season were solid.

Liljegren had 11 points (1 goal, 10 assists) in 47 games with Washington and San Jose. He also ranked among San Jose’s defensive leaders in blocked shots and average time on ice. Capitals coaches and executives were said to be impressed with his ability to move the puck efficiently and remain composed under pressure.

Timothy Liljegren’s extension matters because the Washington Capitals are projected to make significant defensive changes heading into the 2026-27 NHL season.

Veteran blueliner John Carlson is no longer expected to anchor the blue line in the same capacity, and Rasmus Sandin remains in recovery from a knee injury. That makes Liljegren more important to Washington’s defensive rotation.

During his tenure with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Liljegren demonstrated good offensive instincts, skating ability and calm decision-making. However, injuries and coaching changes limited his long-term opportunities in the Toronto lineup.

Liljegren eventually joined the San Jose Sharks and was tasked with more responsibilities, and became more consistent in his game defensively. Improvements kept getting noticed across the NHL before Washington traded for him around the deadline.

And the Capitals see the 27-year-old defenseman as an experienced NHL contributor who can help the team stay competitive in a changing Eastern Conference landscape.
