Winnipeg Jets Goalie Connor Hellebuyck Delivers Key Saves in USA's Strong First Period

Connor Hellebuyck stood tall in the opening period of Sunday's Olympic gold medal game as Team USA carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission against Canada. The Winnipeg Jets goaltender delivered several crucial saves to protect Matt Boldy's early goal at Santagiulia Arena in Milan.

The Americans opened scoring just six minutes into the championship showdown when Boldy split Devon Toews and Cale Makar before tucking a backhand past Jordan Binnington. Hellebuyck then anchored the defensive effort as Canada carried much of the play through the first 20 minutes.

His strong first period continued the stellar form that helped USA reach the championship game. The Americans are seeking their first Olympic gold since the Miracle on Ice triumph at Lake Placid in 1980 while Canada hasn't won gold since Sochi 2014 when NHL players last participated.
