Paris Olympics 2024 Day 6 Highlights: Swapnil Kusale wins bronze in 50m Rifle 3 Positions event; PV Sindhu loses in pre-quarters

Paris Olympics 2024 Day 6 Live Updates: Little-known shooter Swapnil Kusale kept a firm grip on his nerves despite a growling tummy and a racing heart to secure India's first ever Olympic medal in the 50m rifle 3 positions event on a day when four strong podium contenders from the country, including the iconic PV Sindhu, were knocked out of the Games.

Kusale shot an aggregate of 451.4 in the eight-shooter final to finish third after being placed sixth at one stage.

It took the country's overall tally to three, all bronze in shooting, and left it at the 42nd spot on the medal table.

His brilliant performance was followed by a spate of disappointments as two-time Olympic medallist shuttler Sindhu, two-time world champion boxer Nikhat Zareen (50kg), badminton's celebrated men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, and promising rifle shooter Sift Kaur Samra made their way out of the event.

Lakshya Sen was the lone bright spot as he advanced to the quarterfinals at the expense of compatriot H S Prannoy in the men's singles badminton event, holding out hope for a medal from the racquet sport.

The country could nonetheless celebrate thanks to Kusale's medal, which came close on the heels of the stunning performance of Manu Bhaker, who clinched the women's 10m air pistol and mixed team 10m air pistol bronze alongside Sarabjot Singh.

Their combined effort has ensured that India, for the first time in its Olympic history, has a haul of three medals from one single sport.

"I did not eat anything, was feeling the butterflies (in my stomach). Just had black tea and came here. The night before every match, I just pray to god," Kusale said after his unprecedented achievement.

"Today the heartbeat was on the higher side. I just tried to control my breathing and did not try anything different," he added.

Kusale, whose father and brother are teachers in a district school and his mother the sarpanch of Kambalwadi village near Kolhapur in Maharashtra, finished behind China's Yukun Liu (463.6) and Ukraine's Serhiy Kulish (461.3).

The last time a 50m rifle shooter made it to the Olympic finals was in 2012 London when Joydeep Karmakar finished fourth in 50m rifle prone event, which has been discontinued at the Games.

He was in the fourth place after the first standing series. Considered a high-scoring round, Kusale's first shot of the final in kneeling was a lowly 9.6, but he made an excellent recovery after that.

A 10.6 and 10.3 saw Kusale jump momentarily into the second place. But a 9.1 and a 10.1 in his next attempts pushed him back to fourth.

However, a 10.3 propelled him to the third place and he maintained that position to win a medal.

However, Anjum Moudgil and Samra failed to qualify for the final of the women's 50m rifle 3 positions event, finishing 18th and 31st respectively in the qualifications round.

Weary from a challenging loss, Nikhat Zareen valiantly restrained her tears as she recounted the trials she faced both within the ring and in the 48 hours preceding the pre-quarterfinal bout against China's Wu Yu, until she finally succumbed to her emotions.

Touted as one of India's strongest medal prospects before the Games, Nikhat bowed out of the Olympics after a heartbreaking 0-5 loss to the top seed Chinese pugilist at the North Paris Arena on Thursday.

"I will come back strong," she said at least five times, probably trying to convince herself and everyone else around her that the Olympic road does not end here for her.

Nikhat, a two-time world champion, trained on an empty stomach, could not sleep the night before the pre-quarterfinal and kept thinking about the match against the reigning Asian Games gold medallist Yu, who is also a 2023 world champion in flyweight (52kg).

Eventually, her worst fears came true as she lost the battle of the world champions.

'I don't want to stop,' says Olympic history-maker Zheng
Zheng Qinwen embraced making history for China on Thursday by becoming the first player from the country to reach an Olympic Games tennis singles final but insisted: "I don't want to stop".

It was the 21-year-old's first win over the four-time French Open champion at the seventh attempt and ended Swiatek's 25-match winning run on the clay courts of Paris.

"I'm so happy that I could make this history for China tennis because I always wanted to be one of the athletes who got a medal for China and now I'm one of them," said seventh-ranked Zheng who is guaranteed at least a silver medal by reaching the final.

"But I know the fight is not over. It's not the end. The tournament is very long. So I'm really happy but at the same time I'm waiting for more.

"Of course, I have made history already but I don't want to stop here."

Anju Bobby George backs men's relay team, Sable to spring surprise
Athletics Federation of India vice-president Anju Bobby George believes that while the spotlight will undoubtedly be on javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra to defend his Olympic title, the Indian men's 4x400m relay team and steeplechaser Avinash Sable have the potential to spring a surprise at the Paris Games.

A 29-member-strong Indian athletics contingent, led by Chopra, will compete across 16 medal events at the Paris Olympics.

"Everyone knows one name in the athletics nowadays. But the other names, which I would reckon, are Avinash Sable, the 4x400 metres relay team and Kishore Jena (javelin)," said George in a media interaction felicitated by Jio Cinema on Thursday.

"We cannot predict about the medal. But all these events are finals, which itself proves that the path is right (for the Indian athletes)."

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha on Thursday said she was confident about the shooters' good performance in the Paris Games despite their forgettable outing in the last two editions in Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo.

Fielding a 21-member shooting contingent in Paris, the country has already won three bronze medals.

Manu Bhaker became the first Indian shooter to win two medals in a single Olympics when she clinched the bronze in 10m individual women's air pistol and in mixed team event partnering Sarabjot Singh.

Swapnil Kusale on Thursday added another bronze to India's tally in the 50m rifle 3 positions event.

"In the last two Olympics shooting didn't win medals but Manu gave a good start but we were expecting good from Manu earlier also. We are frequently in contact with Manu's personal coach Jaspal Rana and he was very confident about Manu and knew that Manu is going to do well," Usha told PTI.

"We were expecting medals from shooters and now we have won three and expecting more from shooters. Great moment for me and overall all of us."

"I feel more than just happy -- happy isn't enough to describe how I feel," said Zheng, who had played back-to-back three-hour matches to make the semi-final.

"If you ask me to play another three hours for my country, I would.
