Paris Olympics 2024 Day 9 Live Updates: Fencing - Japan win historic gold in men's foil team event

Japan won the Olympic men's foil team title for the first time, beating Italy in a thrilling bout at the Paris Games on Sunday.

Takahiro Shikine opened the scoring against Italy's Tommaso Marini, and Kazuki Iimura, who finished fourth in the individual event on Monday, delivered the final touches in a 45-36 win.

The bout was tight, with Japan leading at first, then Italy, until Iimura scored seven decisive touches against Filippo Macchi, silver medallist in the individual event.

Then substitute Yudai Nagano who fenced a flawless round, scored five touches against Italy's Alessio Foconi to give Japan a comfortable lead of six touches.

It was Japan's fifth fencing medal in Paris, and their eighth medal overall in Olympic fencing.

They won the silver medal in the same event at the London Games in 2012.

U.S. gymnast Sunisa Lee, who was bedridden and seriously ill eight months ago, could not have imagined competing at the Paris Olympics -- let alone win a medal.

Defying all odds, Lee made the U.S. Olympic team after struggling with illness and so far has won three medals in Paris: the team gold medal, bronze in the all-around and bronze on the asymmetric bars on Sunday.

IOC to 'look into' Australian sex offender coach at Paris Olympics

The International Olympic Committee said Sunday it would "look into" how Australian triathlon coach Brett Sutton had attended the Paris Games despite having convictions for child sex abuse.

Sutton was given accreditation by the Chinese National Olympic Committee, IOC spokesman Mark Adams told reporters, and was spotted at the finish line of the women's triathlon on Wednesday along with Swiss silver medallist Julie Derron, whom he coaches.

"They are no longer here. They have left the Games," Adams told reporters when questioned about Sutton. "In the first instance, it's an issue for the Chinese Olympic Committee."

He added: "Whilst we have safeguarding measures in place, unfortunately things do occur from time to time and we will look into this."
