NEW DELHI: Para swimming has been a part of the Paralympic Programme since the inaugural Games in Rome in 1960. It has become one of the most popular sports due to its inclusivity, allowing athletes with various physical and mental disabilities to participate without requiring special equipment, as prostheses are not allowed.
India has a special connection with para swimming, as it was in this sport that the country won its first-ever Paralympics gold. Murlikant Petkar achieved this feat in the men's 50m freestyle 3 event at the 1972 Heidelberg Games, setting a then world record time of 37.33 seconds.
Petkar's victory made him India's first medallist and gold medallist at the Paralympics.
In the 2024 edition in Paris, India will have only one athlete in para swimming - Suyash Narayan Jadhav, who will compete in the Men's 50m Butterfly (S7 category).
Para swimming events at the Paris Paralympics 2024 will be held from August 29 to September 7 at the La Defense Arena.
In para swimming, athletes are classified based on their impairment. The classification system uses a letter and a number: "S" stands for Swimming, numbers 1 to 10 indicate physical impairment, 11 to 13 represent vision impairment, and 14 denotes intellectual impairment. Occasionally, "SB" is used for Breaststroke and "SM" for Medley.
