NEW DELHI: Neeraj Chopra, the Paris Olympic medallist in javelin throw, conveyed his well wishes to the Indian contingent participating in the Paralympics, commencing with the Opening Ceremony in Paris on Wednesday.
India is sending its largest-ever contingent to the Paralympic Games, with 84 para athletes set to compete across 12 out of the 22 sports. The Paris 2024 Paralympics will take place from August 28 to September 9 in France, marking India's debut in para cycling, para judo, and para rowing.
"My best wishes to all the incredible Indian athletes competing in the Paralympic Games which begin in Paris today. Keep inspiring us!" Chopra posted on X.
The opening ceremony will feature Sumit Antil and Bhagyashri Jadhav as India's flagbearers.
India's campaign kicks off on Thursday with para archery, where Harvinder Singh, a Tokyo Paralympics bronze medallist, will compete in the men's recurve ranking round, while Sarita will participate in the women's compound open category.
In para badminton, Krishna Nagar will begin his title defence in the men's singles SH6 category, alongside Sivarajan Solaimalai and Nithya Sre Sivan, who will also be in action on the first day.
Throughout the previous 11 editions of the Paralympic Games, India has secured a total of 31 medals. The Tokyo 2020 Paralympics marked India's most successful campaign to date, with the athletes bringing home 19 medals, including five gold, eight silver, and six bronze.
