"Jess had an amazing week, coming out of the gates in the first week and making the final," said Keys. "I also got off to a good start and I'm looking forward to what's to come this season."

It is the ninth WTA title for the world No. 20 Keys who required medical attention for her left knee during the second set. But she persevered, as last year's US Open finalist Pegula forced a decisive third set.

Keys regained her composure to secure victory on her first match point, building momentum ahead of her Australian Open opening-round match against compatriot Ann Li.

"I haven't been back here (Adelaide) since 2022 when I won the title. I feel I should be back every year in Adelaide," Keys said.

Pegula, meanwhile, admitted that her opponent was the better player on the day.

"I had, like, three winners; it was tough. Maddie hits the ball harder than anyone; she played some amazing tennis," said Pegula. "This was a good week to start the season for me. I'm excited to keep it going (into the Australian Open) in Melbourne ."
