Considered by many to be one of the most important characters in WWE history, CM Punk will always be associated with Living Colour's classic song "Cult of Personality." The rationale behind his choice to release a remastered version of this song when he returned to WWE has been revealed. Punk’s comeback at the Survivor Series Premium Live Event was a pivotal moment for WWE, and fans quickly recognized that he was utilizing a remastered edition of “Cult of Personality,” which was released just before his return at Survivor Series.

Following his return, CM Punk explained why he decided to use the remastered version of "Cult of Personality" in an interview with the No-Contest podcast. He revealed that, before making a reappearance last year, Living Colour had contacted him about licensing the song once more. The two have a tight friendship. They made it plain that they wouldn't continue if the song wasn't intended for him.

Punk suggested that the song was meant for him by letting it happen, even if he was hesitant to give out too much information. Lead singer Cory Glover of the group asked if the song was Punk's, to which he replied that Glover should give it more thought. Additionally, he mentioned that they paid the band directly instead of via the record label. The song was then re-recorded and remastered by Living Colour, a decision Punk thought was prudent. As a result, he felt more at ease giving WWE access to the enhanced version.

He stated: “You know, I’m tight with the band. So, yeah, they’re calling me, going, ‘Hey, they’re trying to license the song again. If this isn’t for you, it’s a hard no.’ I didn’t want to say anything, so I kind of told him it was for me without saying it. I said, ‘Maybe you should just let it happen.’ And Cory [Glover] was like, ‘Is it you or is it not you?’ I said, ‘Cory, I think you should think about it, but what we did —yes, yes, yes—and that’s because we pay the band. We’re not paying the record label.’ Oh, okay, all right. They re-recorded it and remastered it. Smart. Yes. How quickly were they? I feel much better being like, ‘Here’s, you know, here you go [giving money gesture].” [H/T: Ringside News]

Additionally, CM Punk had previously expressed a preference for the original version of “Cult of Personality” over WWE’s version during his first tenure with the company. However, The Second City Saint is delighted to support Living Colour in any capacity he can, which is what truly matters to him.
