The Undertaker’s Legendary WrestleMania Streak: A lasting legacy in WWE history
The Undertaker’s contributions to professional wrestling are unparalleled, with one of his most iconic legacies being his legendary WrestleMania streak. This streak, which spanned more than two decades, became a monumental part of WWE history, elevating The Undertaker to an almost mythical status.
The Undertaker's streak began on a fateful night in 1991 at WrestleMania VII, where he secured his first victory against "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka. What started as just another match would eventually evolve into one of the most significant storylines in wrestling history. Over the years, The Undertaker continued to notch victory after victory, defeating a string of high-profile opponents. Superstars like Jake "The Snake" Roberts, Sid, and Ric Flair all fell victim to The Phenom on WWE’s grandest stage.
As the victories mounted, so did the importance of The Streak. Each year, WrestleMania became synonymous not just with championship matches but with fans eagerly anticipating who would be next to challenge The Undertaker. As his undefeated run continued, The Streak became as important, if not more important, than the World Championship match on the card. Each bout had its own unique story, often involving some of the biggest names in the industry, and the outcome was always a focal point of discussion.
One of the lesser-known stories behind The Streak’s rise to prominence is the contribution of Michael Hayes, a former wrestler and long-time WWE producer. According to Bruce Prichard, a WWE executive, it was Hayes who first recognized the potential of The Undertaker’s consecutive WrestleMania wins. While speaking on the Something to Wrestle With podcast, Prichard credited Hayes with planting the seeds that would eventually turn The Streak into a full-fledged storyline.
“The Streak kind of came up from Michael Hayes. You know Michael always had tidbits of information that Michael would kind of throw out [and] say, ‘Hey, you know The Undertaker’s undefeated at WrestleMania. Something we can do with that. There’s a story there,’” Prichard revealed. “He would push that all the time until finally that streak had built up to being meaningful and hence The Streak.”
Hayes’ persistence paid off, as The Streak soon became an integral part of WrestleMania’s allure. Every year, fans would speculate on whether The Undertaker’s legendary run would continue or if a new challenger would be the one to finally break it.

As The Streak’s significance grew, so did the anticipation for each WrestleMania. It reached its pinnacle at WrestleMania 30 in 2014 when Brock Lesnar was chosen as the man to end The Phenom’s unprecedented run. The decision to have Lesnar break the streak shocked fans around the globe, as many believed The Undertaker’s run of victories would never be broken. To this day, the decision remains one of the most debated moments in WWE history.
Even though The Undertaker’s streak came to an end, many, including legendary commentator Jim Ross, believed it should have continued. “Even Jim Ross previously stated that The Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak should have continued,” the original article noted, reflecting on the widespread sentiment that The Streak’s end was premature.
Despite its conclusion, The Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak will forever be one of the defining aspects of his career. Over the course of his 21 consecutive victories, The Phenom cemented his legacy not only as a dominant force in the ring but also as a key figure in WWE history. The streak became more than just a statistic—it was an event in itself, a highlight of WWE’s biggest show of the year.
No matter how wrestling evolves in the future, The Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak will remain etched in the memories of fans and wrestlers alike. As Bruce Prichard noted, “That streak had built up to being meaningful and hence The Streak.” It’s this meaningful legacy that will ensure The Undertaker’s contributions to WWE are remembered long after his final match.
