Vince McMahon will go down in history as one of the greatest pioneers in the world of professional wrestling. However, another stigma attached to the man behind creating WWE is the multiple controversies that are attached to his name. From being involved in drug-abuse cases to sex trafficking scandals, McMahon has very negative perception about himself by a majority of people.

Despite all the controversies, McMahon is still respected for his contributions to the business. In fact, a WWE Hall of Famer went on record to call him the ‘Savior’ of the company during a time when the entire world had shut down.

During a recent appearance on Something To Wrestle With podcast, WWE Hall of Famer John Bradshaw Layfield opened up about the company facing challenges during the pandemic era. He further shed light on Vince McMahon’s leadership at the time which helped WWE stay strong during that time. He revealed that Vince wanted to bring him back on the commentary desk for the fans to have a familiar voice to listen to each week.

“‘During COVID, Vince called me and he said, ‘I need an old voice on television. Are you coming?’ ‘You know I am.’ I said, ‘Where are you?’ He goes, ‘We’re in Orlando. We got no audience. I need an old voice, the old commentary, somebody that people recognize.’

JBL also revealed that everyone in the company, media and networks was against Vince McMahon’s decision to keep running shows during the pandemic. However, JBL stated that McMahon saw the bigger picture and claimed that he would lose his TV contracts if he shut down.

“I can tell you, almost everybody in the company was against Vince running. Everybody was against it. All the press was against it. Everything, it was, ‘This is horrible. How dare he do this?’He said,’ If I don’t, I will lose all my TV contracts.’ Those TV contracts of live events became worth exponentially more.”

McMahon’s decision was right as their worth became more exponential in the long run and he got billion-dollar deals, leading to JBL say that he saved the company during the pandemic.
