Ahead of
WWE pay-per-view Fastlane, that would pit reigning WWE Champion AJ styles against five other competitors in
John Cena, Dolph Ziggler, Baron Corbin, Kevin Owens and
Sami Zayn
, Zayn picked up a decisive victory in a impromptu Main Event - a fatal-five way match - by pinning his best friend, Owens during this week’s
SmackDown Live
.
Zayn and Owens first interrupted a stellar match between Styles and Ziggler - which ended in no-contest. SmackDown Live Commissioner Shane McMahon added Corbin to the mix to make it a fatal-five way and in a to-and-fro contest, Zayn pounced on the opportunity to prove that he is the best WWE has to offer and a stiff Helluva kick to a reeling Owens, picked up the victory.
Owens was shocked so were crowd and Styles as well. Zayn later said that he did that because he wanted to prove that he is the best and it is his time now.
Earlier, Randy Orton, set to face Bobby Roode for the United States Championship at Fastlane, faced off against
Jinder Mahal accompanied by Sunil Singh with Roode joining at the commentary table.
Orton enjoyed the upper hand in the match before Singh intervened, but he was dispatched by Orton before the Viper, in an ill-advised move, threw Mahal at Roode. Roode then came up to the apron later as Orton was setting up for the RKO.
The slight distraction allowed Mahal to hit a knee on the back of Orton and picked up the win - his fourth against Orton- with the Khallas.
A win for Mahal could very well mean that he could be inserted in the Fastlane card to make the US title match a triple threat.
