During the COVID-19 pandemic, WWE faced the challenge of creating compelling content without live audiences. The company rose to the occasion by delivering unforgettable cinematic matches that captivated fans worldwide. From the Boneyard Match featuring AJ Styles and The Undertaker to the surreal Firefly Funhouse Match between John Cena and the late Bray Wyatt, WWE redefined how wrestling could be presented. They even innovated with both the men’s and women’s Money in the Bank ladder matches, held simultaneously at Titan Towers.

WWE executive Bruce Prichard recently shared that a WWE Hall of Famer could have excelled in these cinematic matches during the pandemic. However, he noted that this wouldn't have worked during the character's peak popularity when live crowds were an integral part of the experience.

"Kane absolutely would've been great for some of the cinematic matches," he said. "But at the same time, that was something that had to grow. Whenever you have a live event, I think people want to see that live event take place in front of them. Live. So, yeah, he would've been good." (Via Something to Wrestle/Wrestling Inc)

Bruce Prichard believes that Kane would have been perfect for cinematic matches, but he also feels that these matches needed to evolve, and live events are best experienced in person.

WWE had experimented with cinematic matches long before the pandemic 2019, but they were not as elaborate as those produced during that time. One of the earliest examples was the Boiler Room Brawl between Mankind and The Undertaker at SummerSlam 1996.

In 2020, the Boneyard Match at WrestleMania 36 marked the first major cinematic match of the pandemic era, filmed at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando.
