Sorry Xperia fans, Sony to ‘defocus’ on India
NEW DELHI: In a recent investors meet, Sony Mobiles announced that it would be defocusing from certain markets including India, USA, China and Brazil. The Japanese tech giant’s announcement comes as the CAGR smartphone growth in Indian, Chinese, Brazilian and Indonesian markets is expected to be just 0.3% in financial year 15-17. This is quite lesser than the company’s estimates of over 8.1% growth from last year.
It is worth mentioning that Sony won’t be completely pulling off its products from the market. However, there will be a drop in its marketing and other efforts. Same strategy will be applied in Latin American and Pacific regions, reports the Xperia Blog website.
The company mentioned it will focus its growth in East Asian regions (including Japan), Europe and the Middle East. Sony also said it will be focusing on offering more devices in premium segment, which is above $250.
Last month, Sony launched its latest smartphone Xperia X series in India. Sony, for now, has only made the Xperia X and the Xperia XA available in the Indian market. The company said it will be soon releasing the price and the release date of the Xperia XA Ultra.
In May, Sony was reported to be killing its Xperia M and Xperia C series. The company might replace these two smartphone sub-ranges within its X series. Sony has already announced that it would be replacing the Z line-up with Xperia X handsets.
Sony also has a large market share when it comes to camera sensors. According to the company, until February this year, its main Exmor, Exmor R, and RS cameras captured a total share of 35% in the smartphone market. It also had 70% share in the sports-cam market.
