Bethesda CEO Todd Howard warns: AI is ‘inevitable’, but it shouldn’t make games
AI is having a bigger and bigger impact on how tech-driven businesses work, but its role in creative fields is still up for debate. Video games, which depend a lot on storytelling, design, and human imagination, are now part of that conversation. Todd Howard, the head of Bethesda Game Studios, talked to BBC News about how AI is becoming more common and what it can't do in game development.
Howard said that AI tools are getting better quickly and are becoming necessary in many fields. However, he made it clear that AI should not be in charge of making video games, even though it can help developers in some ways. His comments have since gotten the attention of both developers and players as studios around the world look into how much automation should be used in a medium that is based on human creativity.
Speaking to BBC News, Howard described artificial intelligence as “inevitable” due to its expanding use across technology and business. At the same time, he drew a firm distinction between using AI as a tool and allowing it to take over the creative process.
He said that AI systems can make text, pictures, or audio, but they aren't good at the creative work that goes into making video games. Howard says that people, not machines, need to come up with important things like the story, the world, the characters, and the overall artistic vision.
Howard explained that video game creation depends on human judgment, emotion, and lived experience. He said that it is hard to get these traits just by using algorithms. He said that AI can help with tasks or make things run more smoothly, but you shouldn't rely on it to make important creative choices.
He stressed in the interview that AI should only be a tool to help writers, designers, and artists who create a game's identity and emotional impact, not a replacement for them.
People who make video games are already using AI tools to check quality, fix bugs, add more languages to games, and make procedural systems. Some studios also use AI to help with the creation of concept art or the development process.
Howard's comments, on the other hand, show that the industry is more concerned with keeping originality and creative control. Many developers are still debating where AI can be helpful without getting in the way of what makes video games fun.

Why Todd Howard believes AI should not replace creativity

How the industry is responding to AI
People who make video games are already using AI tools to check quality, fix bugs, add more languages to games, and make procedural systems. Some studios also use AI to help with the creation of concept art or the development process.
Howard's comments, on the other hand, show that the industry is more concerned with keeping originality and creative control. Many developers are still debating where AI can be helpful without getting in the way of what makes video games fun.
