Biggest outages of 2025: AWS, PlayStation, Cloudflare and other disruptions that shut down major services online
The year 2025 saw some of the biggest outages that disrupted millions of users across streaming, gaming, communications, and other online platforms. Downdetector data reveals that while individual platforms routinely experienced downtime, the most severe incidents were tied to failures at major cloud providers, exposing the growing risks of centralized internet infrastructure. An analysis by Ookla showed that cloud providers, gaming networks and large-scale content platforms featured heavily on this year’s outage lists. Here’s a look at top outages that hit internet users in 2025
As previously mentioned, the year’s most significant disruptions were led by cloud failures that brought down multiple services around the world. The largest outage of 2025 occurred on October 20, when AWS suffered a major breakdown linked to an automated DNS management issue in its US-EAST-1 region. The incident generated more than 17 million user reports and caused widespread outages across platforms such as Snapchat, Netflix and major e-commerce websites.
The second-largest outage was reported on February 7, when the PlayStation Network went offline globally for more than 24 hours, logging 3.9 million reports.
Cloudflare’s core infrastructure failure on November 18 ranked third, with more than 3.3 million reports as websites, apps and APIs worldwide were disrupted for hours.
United States and Canada
This region recorded some of the highest outage volumes, led by PlayStation Network with 1.6 million reports. YouTube’s October disruption followed with 1.5 million reports, while the AWS incident added 1.2 million. Snapchat’s outage on the same AWS day produced more than 944,000 reports. Starlink and Verizon also logged major incidents, underscoring persistent pressure on connectivity infrastructure.
Europe (EU)
Europe’s worst outages mirrored global trends. PlayStation Network led again with 1.7 million reports. Snapchat followed with 989,559. UK carrier Vodafone experienced a major broadband and mobile disruption in October, generating 833,211 reports. WhatsApp, Spotify and Netherlands-based Odido rounded out the region’s top incidents.
Asia Pacific (APAC)
Social media dominated APAC’s largest disruptions. X (Twitter) recorded 645,395 reports in March, followed by Snapchat with 399,108. YouTube’s global streaming issue resulted in 245,087 reports, while AWS outages contributed more than 280,000 reports across two incidents.
Latin America (LATAM)
YouTube led LATAM outages with 183,672 reports. AWS followed closely at 164,011. WhatsApp continued to be a critical platform in the region, recording two major disruptions. Banking services were also affected, with Banco Itaú’s outage generating 73,745 reports.
Middle East and Africa (MEA)
MEA’s top incidents were driven by telecom and cloud disruptions. UAE-based provider Du recorded 28,444 reports, while Cloudflare’s global outage generated 28,016 reports in the region. Snapchat logged 26,392 reports during its October disruption.
