Elon Musk has seemingly responded to Peter Navarro, Donald Trump's senior counselor for trade and Manufacturing, on his comments slamming Twitter for fact-checking his remarks on India. In a post on Twitter, Elon Musk, wrote, "On this platform, the people decide the narrative. You hear all sides of an argument. Community Notes corrects everyone, no exceptions. Notes data & code is public source. Grok provides further fact-checking."
Earlier, Navarro had lashed at Elon Musk after his post on India buying Russian oil was fact checked by the billionaire's social media platform Twitter. Navarro called Twitter's Ccommunity Note "crap", and alleged that Elon Musk is allowing "propaganda" and went on to reiterate his accusations of India purchasing Russian oil to make profits.
"Wow. @elonmusk is letting propaganda into people's posts. That crap note below is just that. Crap. India buys Russia oil solely to profiteer. It didn't buy any before Russia invaded Ukraine. Indian govt spin machine moving high tilt. Stop killing Ukrainians. Stop taking American job", Navarro wrote on Twitter.
Similarly, in an interview with Bloomberg Television last week, Navarro had alleged, "India is helping feed the Russian war machine. I mean Modi's war, because the road to peace runs, in part, through New Delhi."
Twitter's fact-check on Peter Navarro's India comment
His response came to an earlier post where he had accused India of profiteering from Russian oil, alongside claiming that India's tariffs cost "Americans' jobs". Navarro made these remarks in response to an article by the Washington Post, which described the conflicting efforts in Trump's administration over mending the relationship with India. The Washington Post news claimed that the inflammatory language used by Washington towards New Delhi is deepening the crisis in the relationship. Navarro criticised the report and said, "FACTS: India highest tariffs costs U.S. jobs. India buys Russian oil purely to profit/Revenues feed Russia war machine. Ukrainians/Russians die. U.S. taxpayers shell out more. India can't handle truth/spins @washpo Leftist American fake news."
Fact-checking Navarro's post, Twitter's Community Note added a comment, which said, "India's Russian oil purchases are for energy security, not just profit, & don't violate sanctions. While India has some tariffs, the U.S. has a trade surplus with it in services. U.S. also continues to import certain commodities from Russia which is hypocritical."
In the last few days, several Trump administration officials including White House trade advisor Peter Navarro have used offensive language to target India.
India rejects Peter Navarro's 'Russian oil' claim
India on its part strongly rejected Navarro's remarks describing them as "inaccurate and misleading". The Ministry of External Affairs, during its press briefing dismissed comments made by Peter Navarro, with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal calling them "inaccurate and misleading statements." Rejecting at a weekly briefing, Jaiswal said, "We have seen the inaccurate and misleading statements made by Navarro, and obviously, we reject them."
On ties with the US, Jaiswal underlined the importance of the bilateral relationship. He said, "We have also spoken about it earlier. This relationship between the United States and India is very important for us. Both our countries share a comprehensive global strategic partnership, which is anchored in our shared interests, democratic values and robust people-to-people ties."
