FAKE ALERT: 'Made in China' Amul butter not in circulation, false claims viral
CLAIM
Several social media users are posting a video to claim that “duplicate made in China Amul butter” is in circulation in Indian markets.
In the video, a man can be seen claiming that the new packaging of the Amul Butter is duplicate and cheap. The video insinuates that the Amul butter is being manufactured in China.
A Twitter user put out the video and tweeted, “Duplicate Made in China Amul Butter has come in the market. Everyone must watch this video before buying Amul Butter, then be careful while buying Amul Butter.”
Similar claims were made by several other social media users across social media platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp.
TRUTH
The dairy company has labeled these claims completely baseless and fake. It has requested customers not to pay any heed to such claims.
VERIFICATION AND METHODOLOGYOn February 15, 2023, Amul tweeted an advisory via its official handle. The notice issued in public interest debunks these claims.
The note put out by Amul reads, “This is for your kind information that a fake message is being forwarded on WhatsApp and social media platforms regarding duplicate Amul butter in China. We wish to inform you, both packets of Amul butter shown in the video are genuine and manufactured in India by Amul. As per advisory of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, all new dairy products must show the veg logo on the front of the pack.”
“The video clipping shows comparison between the earlier pack and new pack of Amul butter and has been used to create misinformation and spread fear and concern among consumers. A legal notice has been issued to the individuals of Srinagar who are involved in creating this fake news story. We request you to kindly share this message with your friends and family and sensitize them,” Amul further stated.
Further to this, Times of India reported about this on February 16, 2023 and mentioned that the dairy company took to a popular social media site and issued a notice on its official handle while informing the public about this fake news.
The dairy company has issued a legal notice to the miscreants who are spreading this fake news and are asking them to share this public notice with their friends & family to make them aware of the lies that people are spreading about the brand, the report states.
