Screengrab of a tweet is being circulated on instant messaging app WhatsApp to claim that every couple in

Rohingya colonies

in Jammu is producing 10-12 kids. The tweet carries a photo that shows a number of kids surrounding a man with a stick in hand.

A Times Fact Check reader sent the screengrab to us on our WhatsApp number to know if the claim in it was authentic.


Some Facebook pages also posted the same screenshot.

The photo is from

Myanmar

and was taken in 2015. Moreover, the twitter account that posted this photo has been suspended.

VERIFICATION AND METHODOLOGYSince the tweet was posted by handle @Prof_HariOm, we looked up this handle on Twitter and found that the account has been suspended.


Then we cropped the relevant portion of the Tweet screengrab and ran a reverse-image search on it. In the results, we found a Deccan Herrald report dated May 28, 20185. Titled 'Nobel laureates appeal for end to persecution of Rohingya', the report carried the same photo as shared above in the claim.

The photo was credited to news agency Reuters and captioned as 'A Rohingya Muslim religious teacher conducts a class for children on the Koran at a refugee camp outside Sittwe. It should be noted that Sittwe is the capital of

Rakhine state

in Myanmar

Then we traced the photo on Reuters' website. It was clicked on May 21, 2015 by Soe Zeya Tun.

Although the photo in question is from Myanmar, the presence of a large number of Rohingya Muslims in Jammu can not be denied.

As per a report dated June 12, 2018 from the Economic Times, security agencies in India found Rohingya terrorists having links with pro-Pak terror groups in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K).

Another report dated December 20, 2019 from Eurasian Times, Rohingya Muslims pose a big threat to Indian defense installations in J&K.


A 2015 report from the Times of India mentioned that over 5000 Rohingya Muslims have settled in Jammu
