India has made strong progress in shifting households to clean cooking fuel, with LPG emerging as the clear mainstay. Yet this success comes with a risk. The country remains heavily dependent on imported LPG, much of it routed through the Strait of Hormuz, leaving supplies exposed to disruptions in West Asia.
Over 63% households use clean fuel – LPG or piped natural gas – to cook food in India. This number is as high as nearly 93% in urban areas.
LPG rules
LPG still remains the choice of majority for household fuel. While the govt has tried to make piped natural gas popular too, only 307 geographical areas (regions authorised for distribution of PNG) are currently covered under it.
