Why Pak-China expert Gen Subramani’s appointment as Chief of Defence Staff matters
Gen Subramani’s four-decade military career spans some of India’s most sensitive theatres, including counter-insurgency ops in Northeast, command of a premier strike formation on the Pakistan front, and leadership of 17 Mountain Division that guards the China border
General NS Raja Subramani, who assumed charge as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) on May 31, is widely regarded in strategic circles as an expert on China and Pakistan. He succeeds General Anil Chauhan, who retired after serving as CDS for three and a half years.
In his first remarks after taking office, Gen Subramani outlined an ambitious agenda for military transformation. Emphasising continuity in India’s drive towards integrated military reforms and defence self-reliance, he said, “We are committed to implementing the PM’s vision of JAI — Jointness, Atmanirbharta, and Innovation.”
