It took over a century for the US electoral map to geographically assume the form that we associate with it today. A look at some of the milestone years in the country’s voting history

In the first US election, the dominant issue was the ratification of the Constitution. North Carolina and Rhode Island, two of the original 13 colonies that made up the country then — most of the current states were still not part of US territory (the grey areas in map) — had yet to ratify the Constitution and, hence, did not participate in the polls. New York, too, did not choose an elector.

George Washington was elected president with all 69 electoral college votes while John Adams became vice president.
