Immigrants and domestic migration are complicating the American election story

In the waning days of the US presidential election, Republican nominee Trump will be holding rallies in New York and California. And while these are the most populous states in the country, the announcement of these rallies has been met with disbelief from political observers, because in US, it’s not the states with the biggest population that matter. A small group of swing states decides the election.

The US presidential election isn’t really one election, but 51 separate elections, one for each of the states and the capital district. Each of these elections has its own rules: for instance, in some states, the election is done entirely by mail, in some, voters are required to show ID in order to cast a ballot.
