On Nov 8, 2016, the Union government announced the demonetisation of all Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 banknotes of the Mahatma Gandhi Series.

Some eight-and-a-half years later, eight district central cooperative (DCC) banks in Maharashtra have roughly Rs 101.2 crore of demonetised currency still lying with them.
