5 must-visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites in South India
South India is home to a wealth of cultural, historical, and architectural treasures, many of which have earned the prestigious status of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These sites take you on a journey into the region's rich history, which showcase remarkable craftsmanship, artistry, and engineering that continue to amaze visitors from around the world. On that note, we take you to South India and the five UNESCO Heritage Sites that you should not miss.
Group of Monuments at Hampi, Karnataka
Once a thriving city, Hampi used to be a hub of trade, culture, and religion during its peak in the 14th century. Today, its vast complex of temples, palaces, and other structures sprawls across an awe-inspiring landscape of boulders and hills. Highlights include the Vitthala Temple, known for its iconic stone chariot and musical pillars, and the Virupaksha Temple, which is still in active worship.
Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu
Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram, is famous for its impressive rock-cut temples and sculptures, created by the Pallava rulers in the 7th and 8th centuries. Situated along the Bay of Bengal in Tamil Nadu, this site is known for its stunning Shore Temple, which overlooks the sea. Other key attractions include the Five Rathas (a set of rock-cut chariots) and Arjuna’s Penance, a massive open-air rock relief depicting scenes from Hindu mythology. The artistic brilliance of these monuments makes Mahabalipuram a must-visit for history and architecture enthusiasts.
Western Ghats (multiple cities)
The Western Ghats, stretching along the western coast of India, is one of the world’s most biodiverse regions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Covering parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and other states, this mountain range is home to rich flora and fauna, including many endemic species. It plays a critical role in the country’s ecological balance and is known for its lush rainforests, tea plantations, and wildlife sanctuaries like Periyar and Silent Valley National Park. It is a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
Great Living Chola Temples, Tamil Nadu
Built by the Chola dynasty between the 11th and 12th centuries, the Great Living Chola Temples are a trio of Hindu temples that exemplify the zenith of Dravidian architecture. The most famous among them is the Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur, a colossal granite structure dedicated to Lord Shiva. The other two temples, Airavatesvara in Darasuram and the Temple of Gangaikonda Cholapuram, are equally impressive in their grandeur and intricacy, representing the architectural and cultural prowess of the Chola Empire.
Pattadakal, Karnataka
Pattadakal, located in northern Karnataka, is a lesser-known but significant site in South Indian history. This collection of temples from the 7th and 8th centuries showcases a blend of northern and southern Indian architectural styles. The Virupaksha Temple, built by Queen Lokamahadevi, stands as the highlight of this site, displaying exquisite carvings and sculptures. Pattadakal reflects the artistic and cultural achievements of the Chalukya dynasty and serves as a symbol of India’s architectural diversity.
