Makli Necropolis is located near the city of Thatta in the Sindh province of Pakistan. When we say the land of the dead, we mean an actual funerary site. The necropolis is one of the largest funerary sites in the world, and the largest in Asia.


For those curious, a necropolis is a large cemetery or burial ground, typically featuring elaborate tomb structures and monuments. The term necropolis is derived from the Greek words nekros, meaning dead and polis meaning city. So, it refers to a city of the dead where the deceased are laid to rest.


Necropolises often hold historical, cultural, and religious significance. They are commonly associated with ancient civilisations and can contain the tombs of rulers and other prominent figures. Makli Necropolis is exactly that.


It is known for its intricately designed tombs and mausoleums, dating back to the 14th century. Not just that, it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most visited cultural landmarks in Pakistan.



Spread over an area of approximately 10 sqkm, Makli Necropolis is home to over 500,000 tombs, mausoleums, and monuments. From Islamic to Persian and local architectural influences, you will find them all here. It is also the final resting place of some of the most prominent Sufi saints, scholars, and other notable figures from the region.
