Built in 18th century, Ružica Church is the oldest church in Belgrade. The Serbian Orthodox church is tucked in the passage between the Upper and Lower Belgrade Fortress grounds. A medieval church of the same name believed to have existed on the site during the 15th century, which was demolished in 1521. A new church was constructed on the same foundation in 1867. It served as a military church in the initial period. The church’s entrance is guarded by two sculptures depicting a soldier from the army of Dušan, and a solder from the Balkan Wars. The ivy covered exterior facade stands out amidst the ruins of Belgrade Fortress ensemble. The iconostasis on the walls of the church is painted by Russian artist Andrej Bicenko, and it resembles that of the other Russian orthodox churches. Visit this beautiful monument and learn about the conflicts Belgrade has endured for centuries. The unique interior of Ružica Church is a testament to the violent past. It features ornaments made of weapons and ammunition from the First World War. The highlight of the interior is two chandeliers inside the church. It is quite bizarre to spot chandeliers made of bullet casings, swords and cannon parts!Refrain from posting comments that are obscene, defamatory or inflammatory, and do not indulge in personal attacks, name calling or inciting hatred against any community.
