Geneva's relaxed, Italianate former neighbour

Noteworthy for: It's no wonder Carouge feels more southern than the rest of Geneva - it was actually built by Italians back when the area was ruled by the Kingdom of Sardinia.
Once Geneva's smaller neighbour, pretty, Mediterranean-feeling Carouge still looks and feels different from the rest of the city, even though its only a tram ride away from the centre. Home to some of Geneva's best street markets, speciality shops and boutiques, there's an attractive small town feel to its shady squares and to the cluster of bistros centred around its busy marketplace (Place du Marché).

Carouge offers more than just strolling and browsing, however. Come nightfall it's also the location of many of Geneva's liveliest bars, with a low-key sometimes trendy atmosphere markedly different from some of the posing palace grouped around the lake.
