Located near the old city walls, the Church of the Holy Saviour in Chora is a fine specimen of Byzantine monument. Built in 4th century, the Greek Orthodox church was located outside the city of Constantinople. The Chora Church underwent several reconstructions during its history. During the Ottoman era, the church was converted into a mosque and now it serves as a Kariye Museum. The museum contains some of the best preserved Byzantine mosaics and frescos from 13th century. This little monument is laden with exquisite frescos and mosaics depicting journey to Bethlehem, birth of Christ, angels praying and many more. The highlight of the museum is the medieval mosaic of Theodore Metochites presenting a model of his church to enthroned Christ. The interior of the domes is adorned with vivid frescos depicting Virgin Mother with child and Christ Pantocrator. The best way to visit the church is by taking a ferry from the Golden Horn and walk up the hill by the old walls of the city. Even if you have a short stay in Istanbul, do not miss visiting the Chora Church. The mosaics on the walls provide fascinating insights into the Byzantine art.
