Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple

Lord Shiva is the worshipped almighty here in this temple. Also known as Cave temple of South Bengaluru, its history dates to the 16th century AD, when the architect/founder of Bengaluru built it. The temple is built inside a cave located in the Gavipuram area of Bengaluru. The temple is famous for its monolithic pillars and structures in its courtyard. It is also believed that the temple has a secret tunnel that extends up to the sanctum sanctorum (Garbha Gudi) of the Shivagange Temple (around 50 km away, on the outskirts of Bengaluru). The temple sees a huge influx of devotees on the day of Makara Sankranti (usually falls on the 14th of January) when, in the evening, the sun shines directly on the deity’s idol after passing through the horns of the bull (Nandi) that lies facing the almighty here. This is considered a miraculous phenomenon and has been a point of interest for several scientists to research upon.
